An independent archive of gaming historyCanada · For readers 19+

Luma Verique documents the history of casinos and the gaming industry. We do not provide games, gambling accounts, operator comparisons, deposits, prizes or links intended to facilitate wagering. Access to this publication is limited to adults aged 19 or over.

Why this subject needs care

Gambling can lead to financial, relationship and mental-health harm. The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction describes these impacts and publishes research-based resources. A historical article can explain how an industry developed without encouraging someone to participate in it.

There is no reliable way to treat gambling as a source of income. Games involving chance can produce losses, and strategies do not eliminate that risk. A person can be affected even when they are not the one gambling.

Signs that support may be useful

Possible signs include spending more money or time than intended, hiding activity, borrowing to continue, chasing losses, neglecting other responsibilities, or feeling anxious, ashamed or unable to stop. These are reasons to pause and seek help, not a diagnosis.

If gambling is affecting you or someone close to you, speaking with a trained support service can help you understand options. Family and friends can seek guidance too.

Canadian help and practical boundaries

For help in Ontario, CAMH lists ConnexOntario at 1-866-531-2600 for information and referrals. CAMH also maintains a directory of provincial and national tools and resources. If you are elsewhere in Canada, use that directory or your provincial health service to find local support.

If you choose to gamble through a lawful service, consider setting time and spending limits in advance, taking breaks and using any available self-exclusion tools. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. In Canada, call or text 988 for suicide crisis support.

Our editorial boundary

Our coverage of regulations, games and machines is descriptive. We do not publish “winning systems,” promotional bonuses or betting instructions. References to regulators, archives and historic institutions are provided for verification and context.

Our 19+ site rule is a voluntary editorial restriction. It does not summarize every province’s gambling laws. For current legal requirements, consult the relevant official regulator.
